At the Summer Vegetables Conference held this week in the Golan Heights, an ambitious vision for Israel's food security for the year 2050 was presented. This vision emphasizes four key principles: local production, improved water resource management, development of skilled labor, and investment in research and advanced mechanization.
Speakers at the conference addressed field challenges such as the decline in available agricultural land and the high costs ofwater, while also presenting innovative solutions to strengthen local production infrastructure.
Uri Kellner, head of the Golan Regional Council, stated: “We are facing a significant reduction in available agricultural land. We must find innovative ways to utilize every 1000 square meter as efficiently as possible.” The solutions presented include the development of advanced cultivation methods such as hydroponics and soilless growing media, which are particularly suited to the climate conditions of northern Israel.
The conference also highlighted the opportunities inherent in the Golan Heights, where unique climatic conditions allow for optimal cultivation of resilient vegetable varieties such as tomatoes and peppers. Projects like "Golan Basket" were showcased as models for optimizing the distribution of local agricultural produce, with the goal of strengthening both the regional and national economy.
